School Workshop & Outreach program
Jason Coleman's Ministry of Dance aims to provide accessible dance to every person, of every age, of every skills level giving education, knowledge and experience in a supportive and caring environment.
It is through dance and art programs the education team at Ministry is able to work within the education system throughout Victoria sharing their love, vision and passion for dance inspiring other school aged students to do the same.
There are numerous issues facing the youth of today. School-aged children are dealing with depression, alcoholism, bullying and racism and sadly the list continues.
Children and adolescents need information and skills; a safe and supportive environment; a program which encourages the integration of people of different cultural and religious backgrounds; and a place in which they can break down the barriers that are preventing psychological and emotional growth and development. These factors can significantly decrease the risk of severe or fatal consequences as a result of untreated emotional and/or behaviour problems.
Through the Outreach and School workshop program we are making an effort to assist education and be support of teachers in making this an easy transition.
WHAT WE AIM TO ACHIEVE
1. To provide an emotional outlet and supportive environment for school aged children that are emotionally troubled, have behavioural problems or are dealing with negative circumstances at home or at school.
OUTCOME OF THE PROGRAM
1. Team skills – Students will collaborate creatively on choreographic tasks (groups, pairs) and learn fundamental skills for team moral building and team support
2. Independence skills - Individual tasks and responsibility to prepare oneself for performance and taking ownership
3. Leadership skills – Students controlling group rehearsals and taking charge of given situations
4. Class discipline and work ethic – Paying strict attention to teacher/choreographer in classes and rehearsals and practising choreography individually.
5. Confidence and self esteem – Performing in front of other student members in class and performing to public audiences.
6. Individual thinking –Communicating ideas, sharing personal feedback with Teachers and peers.
Over the past year Ministry of Dance Education Team has been hosting weekly dance and performance workshops for Primary & Secondary schools and Multi-cultural Community Groups. Having been widely exposed to the fast development of the children we have worked with, inevitably we have reached a point in which we would like to take it one step further. We have witnessed students of varying ages, skills and opportunities stand in front of their peers and teachers and perform after having refused to dance when they first arrived or showing signs of low self esteem and confidence holding onto the barriers they may have surrounding themselves. This vast change in behaviour happens within an hour of the students experiencing a session in different styles of dance and the barriers begin to break as they learn to trust and grow in such a short space of time facilitated by specialised teachers and choreographers of the Ministry. It is through the knowledge we have within the industry and the support to educate these students - they are able to gain knowledge, skills and enjoy an experience they may not have been exposed to previously. The joy a dance and performance session brings to individuals of every background is incredible; you can only imagine the difference an on-going performance project could promote within these young people.
